Handy Hints...

The Value of Vacuuming...

Picture
Vacuuming is one of those jobs that most of us hate, yet it's very important to maintain the life of your carpet and the quality of the air in your home.
Almost 80 percent of all carpet soil even fine particulate can be removed by vacuuming.
House dust mites, pollens, animal dander and other allergy causing agents can be reduced through regular vacuuming and professional cleaning.

For best results, use a vacuum cleaner with a power head and one fitted with a micro filtration system for indoor air quality.

Making the Most with Mats...

Picture
Protecting your investment, whether it is carpet, cork, vinyl orceramics, can be greatly increased with the use of Mats.
Mats at the entrance to doors and inside doorways can act as barrier to grit, sand, or dirt that are highly abrasive on carpet and hard floor surfaces.
Mats that trap the dirt reduce the time needed to vacuum.

Mats should be of a quality that assist in the removal of dirt from the shoes and trap dirt within the fibres
Consult with your local carpet dealer for the latest range available.

Safety Tip
Non slip backing on mats and rugs is highly recommended especially on polished surfaces such as hard floors.

Spots or Stains...

There is a large difference between a spot and a stain.
A spot is a substance adhering to the carpet fibre which can easily be removed in a normal cleaning operation.

A stain is a substance which has altered or dyed the fibre and will only be partially removed by normal cleaning operation such as hot water extraction.
A stain will always require special treatment.

If you are unsure of how to deal with a Spot or Stain then iClean Services can assist with professional appropriate advice to protect your carpet.

Pet Problems...

Picture
Cats and dogs as well as children or incontinent adults are often responsible for accidental urine spills on carpets.

When a spill is not cleaned thorougly or not cleaned at all the result is a strong unpleasant odour with the possibility of permanent staining of carpet fibres.

Urine leaves the body in an acid state, with a pH of about 4 and is rather pure and generally contains no harmful bacteria.  The main ingredient in urine is uric acid.

The warm acid state of urine offers a breeding ground for bacteria that begin to flourish almost immediately.  In this original acid state urine begins to oxidize and react with the carpet to create a colour change which will become permanent if the urine is not removed.
As urine begins to dry it changes in hydrogen content and forms crystalline salts which become attached to the carpet fibres and backing.
When dried urine is remoistened it gives off an ammonia gas.  This is one way to identify a problem area, by the odour.  Urine odour comes from two sources bacterial and chemical.

It is important to treat urine contanminated areas on carpet to prevent unhealthy breeding of bacteria.

Emergency Tip
Immediately soak up all spills with paper towel or towelling material.  Pour a very small amount of cold water onto the affected area, stand on the towel to apply pressure to assist in soaking up the water.  Repeat as necessary.
Do not rub the carpet as this can damage the fibres.
